Voices from the Spring

There is music that tells stories. And there is music that preserves the memory of a nation. This living spring of tradition is what the concert of the National Philharmonic Choir "Voices from the Spring" leads us to, dedicated to two great composers who transformed folk song into an art with a universal message – Petko Staynov and Zoltán Kodály.

On September 30, in the "Bulgaria" hall, the audience will hear works born from the folk memory, from the rhythm of the earth, and from the human voice. Both composers dedicate a significant part of their work to collecting, studying, and artistically transforming folklore, proving that national tradition can sound both deeply rooted and perfectly contemporary.

Petko Staynov is among the most significant figures in Bulgarian music of the 20th century. His choral ballads create a new genre in our national culture – large musical narratives, where legends, historical events, and heroic figures come to life. His music is both epic and deeply human, and his choral works remain a benchmark for the mastery of every vocal ensemble to this day.

Opposite him in the program stands Zoltán Kodály – the composer who turned Hungarian folk song into the foundation of a national music school and whose ideas for music education changed the way generations of children around the world engage with art.

The conductor of the evening is Maria Valchanova.

"Voices from the Spring" is an invitation to hear how folk song passes through time – from the field and village square to the concert stage, without losing its power.
