"The Misanthrope" is one of the most famous and frequently performed comedies by the great French playwright Jean-Baptiste Molière. The play was first presented on June 4, 1666, on the stage of the Palais Royal in Paris. The main role was played by Molière himself. The troupe performed 34 consecutive shows, and by the end of Louis XIV's reign, the play had been staged 199 times. This fact clearly shows that upon its debut, Molière's dark Misanthrope touched upon significant issues of the time, humanity, and morality.
In the play "The Misanthrope," it deals with relationships and situations in which we have all found ourselves and suffered defeats. It exposes, with such brilliance and passion, the self-love, flattery, and hypocrisy that over the years it has received exceptional resonance and fame, and today it sounds more relevant than ever.
