Teofil is a successful celebrity writer whose fame, however, has recently faded considerably. Dreaming of distancing himself from his image as an author of saccharine romantic novels, he writes a short poetic tale about a little sea snail that has lost its shell and is searching for the meaning of life.
To his own surprise, Teofil rediscovers his inspiration through this story, but has no idea what effect it will have on those close to him. As if in a mirror, they begin to recognize themselves in the characters—sea urchins, shrimp, mermaids, and other sea creatures—and discover hidden messages in the metaphors.
That evening, everyone gathers to settle their scores. And a true cataclysm ensues. One after another, the family members pour out everything weighing on them, expose their fears, and say everything in their hearts, giving rise to a torrent of comic and surreal misunderstandings and missed connections.
Leonor Confino’s “Mirror, Mirror” is a witty contemporary comedy about the person of the 21st century, living in an era of ever-increasing alienation. It raises the fundamental question of whether, as human beings, we are capable of seeing the world as it is, or whether we see it only through the reflection of what we ourselves are.
