Alarma Punk Jazz presents:
HUGO RACE FATALISTS :: Live at Bee Bop Cafe!
A special Saturday evening on October 17, 2026, with one of the most hypnotic voices of the contemporary Melbourne scene.
Hugo Race, whose veins flow with the blood of The Bad Seeds (in the early 80s, he was the youngest in the group for a few years, co-author of the iconic song From Her To Eternity together with Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Blixa Bargeld, and Barry Adamson), Hugo Race - the creator and frontman of the legends of Australian post-punk-blues The Wreckery, as well as The Fatalists (in Europe) and The True Spirit (in Australia) later, the discoverer of Tamikrest (together with Chris Eckman) for the European audience... and not only.
We can say that his music is influenced by both John Lee Hooker and Ali Farka Touré, as well as by Gia Kancheli, atmospheric ambient, new wave, and psychedelic rock (from Doors to Anatolia).
In the last decade and a half, he has performed with all his active groups - Fatalists, The True Spirit, Dirtmusic (currently a trio with the founder of the Glitterbeat label Chris Eckman and Murat Etel from "Baba Zula"), the duo with Michelangelo Russo, and as a solo artist, he has played both in the mythical First Studio of BNR and at "Sofia Poetiki" (back in 2015)... In Plovdiv, specifically with the "Fatalists," he has played twice - in 2013 at the now non-existent venue Stage 51 and in 2017 at another iconic club from that decade - Void. This time will be the third, fortunately.
Hugo Race Fatalists holds a special place in his work, as well as in the history of "Alarma Punk Jazz." This was the first group we invited for a short tour (Sofia-Ruse-Plovdiv) at the beginning of the last decade, and statistics say that we haven't seen and listened to them in our country for more than 9 years (their last visit was in the spring of 2017).
The band consists of Hugo Race (guitar and vocals), Diego Sapignoli (drums), Francesco Giampaoli (bass), and Giovanni Ferrari (guitar). Diego and Keko have played here with their now non-existent trio Sacri Cuori, and Giovanni has played and recorded with Rokia Traoré and PJ Harvey.
They will also present their new (sixth in their discography as a group) album I Made It All Up For You, which was released in March this year :: https://hugoracefatalists.bandcamp.com
