Exhibition by artist Katerina Katsarova at Central Halls

On November 1 at 6:00 p.m., the “Musical Iconographers – The Sound of the City” festival will present the exhibition “Hesychia” by the young artist and icon painter Katerina Katsarova at Central Halls.

The opening is being held on the Day of the National Awakeners for a reason – a celebration of spirituality, knowledge, and the people who preserve the light of cultural memory. It is precisely toward this inner light that the exhibition “Hesychia” is directed – an artistic and spiritual exploration of the connection between the Byzantine iconographic tradition, the artistic heritage of the Palaiologan Renaissance, and the mystical theology of hesychasm.

The word “hesychia” means silence, stillness, and inner quiet. But this is not empty or lifeless silence. It is a state of concentration and spiritual contemplation in which a person withdraws from the noise of the outside world in order to draw closer to the deepest layers of their own being.

In Katerina Katsarova’s exhibition, silence is a presence. It unfolds through image, color, golden light, gesture, and gaze. Each work conveys a sense of time flowing more slowly, more deeply, and beyond the visible. Here, the image is not merely an object to observe, but a space for an encounter between the earthly and the spiritual, between human vulnerability and the striving for eternity.

The exhibition includes iconographic and painted works devoted to the Byzantine style of the Palaiologan Renaissance and its connection with the theological principles of hesychasm. Through classical and contemporary artistic techniques, the artist seeks a modern path toward a centuries-old tradition without turning it into a frozen historical memory.

Her approach combines respect for the canon with personal sensitivity and a profound understanding of the artistic language of Christian art. The images in “Hesychia” convey the restraint, symbolism, and inner concentration characteristic of the Byzantine tradition, while also speaking to contemporary people who live amid noise, movement, and a constant flow of information, yet continue to seek meaning, peace, and spiritual support.

Katerina Katsarova was born in 2003 in Montreal, Canada. She graduated from the Iliya Petrov National School of Fine Arts in Sofia, specializing in Graphic Arts. Her artistic interests encompass painting, graphic arts, academic drawing, and iconography; in her work, she uses tempera and acrylic on wood, acrylic painting on canvas, and various graphic techniques.

Her artistic path has been marked by a lasting interest in Byzantine iconography, medieval Christian art, the Palaiologan Renaissance, and the spiritual principles of hesychasm. In addition to working as an artist and icon painter, Katerina is also a lecturer, presenting audiences with topics related to the history, periodization, and stylistic movements of the Byzantine iconographic tradition.

Although still very young, Katerina Katsarova already has considerable exhibition experience in Bulgaria and abroad. In 2022, she participated in the “Mixing Identities” International Painting Biennale organized by ItsLiquid Group at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello in Venice. In 2023, two of her iconographic works were presented at the International Festival of Christian Art in Houston, Texas.

In 2024, she opened her first solo exhibition, “Image and Presence,” at the Boris Hristov House-Museum in Sofia, featuring more than 60 paintings with iconographic and secular subjects. That same year, she presented a solo exhibition at the Small Basilica in Plovdiv as part of the program of a festival of Orthodox Christian music. In 2025, she participated with her third solo exhibition in the “Dostoino Est” International Festival of Orthodox Art in Pomorie.

Her works have received awards in national and international art competitions. Katerina is a gold medalist in the International Youth Competition for Academic Portrait Drawing of the I. V. Surikov Moscow Art Lyceum, a finalist in the International Anatomical Drawing Competition of Sechenov University, and in 2022 she won the National Youth Competition for an Easter Festive Drawing organized by the Nadezhda Municipal Cultural Institute. Her award-winning iconographic work was presented as a gift to the Bishop of Velichki and is now kept at the Bachkovo Monastery.

In “Hesychia,” Katerina Katsarova brings together her accumulated artistic experience and deep interest in the spiritual dimensions of the image. The exhibition does not offer definitive answers, but creates a space for contemplation. It invites viewers to slow their pace, free themselves, at least for a moment, from the noise of everyday life, and enter into dialogue with what cannot be expressed through words alone.

Presenting “Hesychia” in the heart of the modern city creates a compelling contrast. Amid Sofia’s dynamic, polyphonic rhythm, a space of inner silence opens up. In this way, the exhibition naturally fits the idea of the “Musical Iconographers – The Sound of the City” festival – a project that brings together different arts, cultural traditions, and generations of artists, turning the city into a stage for spiritual and artistic dialogue.

On November 1, Central Halls will become a meeting place between ancient imagery and contemporary people, between artistic tradition and personal searching, and between visible representation and invisible spiritual experience.

You are invited to the opening of the “Hesychia” exhibition – a journey toward the silence that does not separate people from the world, but helps them see it more clearly.
