What can we say? When? In what way? Under what circumstances?

Although we take freedom of speech for granted, there are things that can no longer be said. Especially in relationships between men and women.

Yet they tell each other everything. Two characters with hellish tempers. He has no scruples, provokes, and never keeps quiet. She is unfiltered, insolent, and arrogant. They love each other, but spend most of their time arguing and disagreeing. Money, politics, plastic surgery, social media… The topics are endless, as is the argument, because neither of them gives up their position.

They are Teodora Duhovnikova and Zahari Baharov, who, under the direction of Yavor Gardev, together “assemble” “Don’t Say That!” on the theatre stage. The French play by Salomé Lelouch received three nominations for the 2022 Molière Award (Best Comedy; Best Actor in a Private Theatre; Best Playwright).

“Don’t Say That!” is a comedy of dialogue in a free and unconventional tone. The lines are sharp, but at the same time funny… Because they are true. And because they are part of the life of every couple.

Beating people with words is a deeply erotic experience. The self-conviction that you are a prophet of truth, its licensed conduit and appointed articulator, is a powerful aphrodisiac that lifts you off the ground, allowing you to walk heedlessly over other people’s heads and feel exhilarated and exalted.

Speaking the truth is a grand illusion, bringing with it a sense of moral superiority, innate fearlessness, and dominance over all those who, for one reason or another, cannot afford the luxury of such utterance.
“Don’t Say That!” by Salomé Lelouch is a play that explores how powerful and dangerous the language of “truth” can be, how devastating “true” words can be, and how crushing and destructive their careless use can become.

Two adults mercilessly beat each other with words, like children who have stumbled into a warehouse full of hammers. The reckless and tactless wielding of these heavy verbal toys, however, besides raising adrenaline levels, also begins to break the bones of trust, until little by little it tears apart the delicate fabric of communication itself.
