Overview
Two choirs. Two traditions. One special musical evening
On October 20, the Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis will be filled with the polyphonic sound of two impressive children’s and youth choirs—the guests from Switzerland, the Knabenkantorei Basel, and Plovdiv’s “Detska Kitka” Choir, conducted by Yana Deliradeva.
KNABENKANTOREI BASEL
One of Switzerland’s established youth choirs, the Knabenkantorei Basel has a history spanning almost 100 years and today brings together around 80 boys and young men in its concert ensemble.
The choir impresses not only with its high musical standard, but also with its stage energy and exceptionally diverse repertoire—from Renaissance and Romantic music to contemporary works, folk music, and music from different cultural traditions.
Knabenkantorei Basel is well known on the international stage for its concert tours in Europe and overseas, performances with leading orchestras, and prestigious awards. In 2023, the choir won the title of European Champion at the European Choir Games in Norrköping and the Grand Prix of Nations in the “Sacred Music with Accompaniment” category. KKB is a co-founder of the European Youth Choir Festival in Basel. Since 2017, its artistic director has been Oliver Rudin, a former member of the choir.
This is not the first encounter between the young Swiss singers and Bulgaria—they will be touring Bulgaria in October, with Plovdiv as one of their special stops along the way.
“DETSKA KITKA” CHOIR
Plovdiv’s “Detska Kitka” Choir, part of the Center for Support for Personal Development—Municipal Children’s Complex—Plovdiv, is one of Bulgaria’s emblematic children’s and youth vocal ensembles.
Its history began in 1947, and over the years the choir has established itself through concert performances in Bulgaria and around the world, its rich repertoire, and numerous awards from international competitions and festivals.
Today, the various ensembles of “Detska Kitka” include girls from Plovdiv schools who develop not only their vocal skills, but also their love of music, the stage, and making music together. The concert ensemble is conducted by Yana Deliradeva.
The meeting of the two choirs promises an evening filled with youthful energy, beautiful voices, and music that crosses borders.
We look forward to seeing you on October 20 at the Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis!
