“Aida” – Verdi’s most spectacular masterpiece – wins the audience’s love with monumental scenes that bring to life the themes central to the composer’s entire oeuvre: the struggle for independence, the pursuit of freedom, self-sacrifice and the power of love. The expressive melodiousness and psychological depth of Aida’s arias, together with the ceremonial splendor of the marches in the choral sections, have etched Verdi’s music into the hearts of generations of opera lovers. Varna’s history of Aida productions is connected with the Summer Theatre: in 1957, this opera was the first performance to inaugurate it and, after the wars, to revive Bulgaria’s first festival, now known as the Varna Summer International Music Festival.
The plot tells of the powerful feelings shared by Aida, an Ethiopian princess enslaved in Egypt, and Radames, an Egyptian military commander. The two warring sides are on the brink of war, and on the battlefield, alongside the spears, the fates of two lovers become intertwined. The Egyptian pharaoh’s thirst for power and his daughter Amneris’s jealousy of Radames shape a tragic fate for the young warrior. But the love between him and Aida is so strong that it transcends every boundary, even the one between life and death.

The plot tells about the strong feelings shared by the Ethiopian princess, enslaved in Egypt - Aida, and the Egyptian warlord Radames. The two warring parties are on the brink of war, and on the front, in addition to spears, the destinies of two lovers are crossed. The desire for power of the Egyptian pharaoh and the jealousy of his daughter Amneris for Radames, draw a difficult fate for the young warrior. But the love between him and Aida is so strong that it crosses all boundaries, even that between life and death.
